How To Use Twitter – A Beginners Guide, Part 1

Since its launch in 2006 Twitter has established itself as one of the most successful websites to grace the internet, with over 350 million users worldwide. It is easy to use yet this powerful micro blogging platform has gained cult status with its many users, invented words into modern day conversation and even changed the way news is delivered.

In Part 1 of this guide we are going to look at what is Twitter? What Twitter can be used for? Finally we are going to take you through the process of signing up.

What is Twitter?
In its own words Twitter is an online social networking and microblogging service that enables its users to send and read text-based posts of up to 140 characters, known as “tweets”. Twitter, like Facebook is completely free to use.

The original idea was born during a day long brain storming session at podcasting company Odeo and launched on July 15th 2008. Since its launch Twitter has received rapid growth and still continues to grow.

The bare bones of what you get with Twitter is a profile (which you can style to your personal tastes or branding) which acts as your home on the site. From that home page you have the ability to post tweets which are seen publically, follow people and be followed apart from sending direct messages that are only seen by the person you send to.

What are tweets I hear you cry? The simple answer is… a thought from your mind broadcast across the twitter network. What you tweet about will vastly depend on what you are using your Twitter account for. Below are a few short case studies to give you an idea……….

Personal Tweets – With personal accounts you may want to tweet about the gig you have just been to or the amazing movie you have just watched.

Business Tweets – Businesses often use tweets to promote their services, products and latest offers.

To sum up Twitter it is basically a tool that provides you with a platform to publish your views on the web.

What can Twitter be used for?
Twitter can be used for anything from promoting your business, keeping in touch with friends, to stalking celebs. By signing up to Twitter you are providing yourself with a facility to network, promote and stay in touch with what is going on in the world.

The uses of Twitter are unofficially split in two, business and personal. So let us take a look at these uses separately.

Business – Twitter offers a fantastic sounding board for businesses which can massively raise their profile in whatever chosen sector. Whether you are a freelancer, photographer/model, band or multinational company, Twitter is an excellent free resource to get your business known.

Once building up a large targeted following on twitter, a simple tweet offering your services or maybe a special offer will get major exposure to users interested in your service.

Personal – Many tweeters use Twitter to keep in touch with friends and family, their favorite celebrity or website.

Twitter is a very sociable place where it is easy to find new friends with the same interests and also lets fans connect with their favorite celebs or sports stars like never before.
